St Joseph Altar

A Saint Joseph Altar is an offering of Love, Labor, and Sacrifice in honor of the Patron Saint of the Sicilians and the Universal Church. According to legend, the people of Sicily prayed to St. Joseph, their patron, to end the drought that had brought famine to their island. Finally it rained and the crops flourished. To show their gratitude, they prepared a table with an assortment of foods they had harvested. The first St. Joseph Altar was small, but as time went on, the creative spirit of the Italians caused the altars to grow larger and more elaborate.
